10 Ways to Get the Beach House Look

It’s Memorial Day weekend and that means the unofficial start of the summer season is upon us. For me, summer is synonymous with the beach. I’m lucky enough to live within a 10 minute drive to the ocean and I’ve always loved the light and airy beach house aesthetic. To me that means adding subtle and classic details like texture, stripes and touches of blue. Nothing over-the-top or too “theme” like. So here are 10 ways to get the beach house look.www.CottageNumber46.com

One: Keep it Light. White paint, light flooring and upholstery with some contrasting accessories will give that easy, breezy look.Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.30.32 AM

Two: Add Texture. In the form of grass cloth, linen, rattan, sisal rugs, baskets and block prints. Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.50.52 AM

Three: Just Add Stripes. This is easy to do with pillows, rugs, window coverings and even a touch of wallpaper.Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.10.53 AM

Four: Take it Outside. Give your outside space some sea side character by incorporating weather friendly teak or rattan furniture, galvanized pots, outdoor lanterns or an Adirondak chair.Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.54.42 AM

Five: Sea Inspired Art. It’s easy to find tons of great art these days on Etsy, One Kings Lane and Minted. Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.52.20 AM

Six: Bring the Outside In. Go for a slightly tropical vibe with a fiddle leaf fig or some succulents or get a Hamptons look with classic blue or white hydrangeas. Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.22.39 AM

Seven: Shiplap!  This one deserves an exclamation point because it’s one of my favorite ways to add a coastal touch.  Consider adding a wall of white painted shiplap in a bath or hall. It has beach house written all over it. Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.49.37 AM

Eight: Give a Nod to the Nautical. Incorporate something brass or sailing inspired or both! Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 10.27.53 AM

Nine: Come Down with a Case of the Blues. Any shade will do.Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 11.06.44 AM

New Bath, New Clients and New York City

I simply can’t believe we are diving head first into March already. Not that I’m complaining or anything. The weather in these parts has been beautiful and signs of spring are everywhere. But, February went by in a blink and I’ve hardly had the time to blog so here’s a round up of what I’ve been up to: Day dreaming and plotting plans for our master bath remodel, working with an awesome new client on design of their living room and entry and a quick trip to New York City for my day job where I got to stay in an amazing hotel (pics below).

Master Bath Planning – Here are the finishes I’m playing around with for our master bath: weathered oak, marble, mixed metals (brass and chrome) and of course a dreamy free-standing tub. I’m on the fence about going with a marble tile floor in a hex pattern or a beautiful cement tile.

Speaking of beautiful bathrooms, I was fortunate enough to stay in a fabulous New York City  hotel last week that among other things, is home to some of the most fabulous bathrooms — The Greenwich Hotel. I fell head over heels in love with it and I think I may be ruined for life.  The furnishings were warm, worldly and luxurious. No two rooms are exactly alike and the bathrooms… filled with brass, marble and gorgeous tiles. Be still my heart.

And finally, I’m excited to be making some progress for a local client’s living room and entry. Here’s a progress shot below. Down came the dark wood paneling and up goes new dry wall. What’s amazing is, the husband is doing just about all the work himself on weekends and evenings…On the entire house! Impressive. Yes, this makes it a little slow going, but it will be worth the wait.

My clients wanted a warm, casual and inviting space. As you can see from the photo above, they’ve got great beamed ceilings and a dramatic rock fire place. This is their formal living room and they want it to be a place for the grown ups to relax by the fire, read and entertain. Here’s a look at their inspiration board.

I’ll share progress pictures one of these days, but for now, bring on spring!

Rincon House: Master Bedroom

Happy Sunday everyone. I don’t know about you, but in our house, Sundays are made for lounging in bed with coffee and iPad in hand. (For reading design blogs of course!) Speaking of lounging in bed,  I’m excited to share my master bedroom with you today. I’ve been slowly updating it over the past few months and waiting for the last piece of furniture to arrive and it’s ready for a look.

But first, here are some beautiful bedrooms that got me inspired.0b03fab9cb293cf4ad8faf16b51beeba018124fcbcc24ad23c0bd22f9728e31a34b14f5fbc103832974a543ebff7edec0adcbecba760fc9eccef410c707ffda7bb504e4240bc54382c692031dd01b39a

I wanted serene colors with layers of white, cream and blue. I lean towards classic lines, which lead me to the Chesterfield headboard. I love the tufting and the fact that it reads both masculine and feminine.  I also wanted some of that coastal, casual California feel, which is where the the scalloped capiz light fixture and vintage pillows came in. They add texture, character and dimension. And finally, I just had to incorporate some great pieces art, some of which I’ve found on Etsy and some that I’ve collected over the years.  Screen Shot 2016-02-07 at 10.36.33 AM

I hear there’s some kind of football game on today that everyone’s watching. I guess I better get out of bed and out to the store for snacks and drinks here pretty soon.  Enjoy!
