Modern Florals

It’s still hot around these parts and mother nature is not exactly behaving like Fall. During a recent pinning bender, I came across some dramatic modern florals in the form of wall paper, fabric and art that really made me want to curl up with a book and a cup of tea on a chilly day. These new florals have a way of setting an elegant, moody, etherial and dramatic tone.  As you’ll see below in some of these pics, dark florals really pop against the contrast of white.  They’re absolutely made to go with brass finishes, and look equally amazing when paired with both modern and traditional accents. Oh my gawwwwwd they’re beautiful.

You can go bold and wallpaper an entire powder room, as seen below here from Amber Interiors. main.original.585x0

All of the florals above are from Elle Cashman. She has a line of fabrics and pillows in silk, velvet and cotton which would be a more subtle way to bring in the look without having to commit to an entire wall or room. And lastly, I realize this mural from Ane Wall Decor isn’t exactly a floral. It’s more of a pastoral scene, but still cool in the right setting. See more from Ane Wall Decor here on Etsy. il_fullxfull.576201687_eq5e

I’m not overly committed to florals like these in my own home, but I can still appreciate them for the works of art they are. Now bring on the cooler weather please!

Designer Spotlight: Caitlin Wilson

As much as some days I love soothing colors, today I’m excited to write about the bold design aesthetic of Caitlin Wilson, an interior and textile designer based out of Portland, Oregon. Countless times I’ve spotted pretty rugs and fabrics on Pinterest and Instagram and traced the source back to Caitlin. I’ve become a huge fan. Her textiles, rugs, wallpapers and interiors are loaded with personality, fun patterns and color, all the while remaining sophisticated, classic and unique. I’m betting you won’t be able to resist either.

Below are some lovely rooms from her design portfolio. I’m absolutely drooling over every detail of this kitchen and dining space from the brass hardware to the bistro chairs to her signature fabric on the barstools.

I adore her antique inspired Persian “Kismet” rug shown here in coral, but it also comes in navy and is equally beautiful. I’m plotting a place in my home for one. Perhaps kitchen…

I hope to get back into the swing of regular posting. Thanks for your patience while I had a few sporadic weeks. Very soon I’m taking some photos of my recently completed rooms and can’t wait to show you so stay tuned.

Wallpaper Beauty

Wallpaper is back! Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know this is not headline news. But I’m actually pretty excited about it. I love to see the way design trends get reinvented when they come back in style. I don’t want to give away my exact age, but let me just admit here that I’m old enough to have lived through the last wallpaper hey-day. I remember fondly how my mom took me to the local paint store and we poured over stacks and stacks of wallpaper books looking for the one that would work best in my “tween” bedroom. Oh yeah, this wallpaper ultimately had to coordinate with burgundy shag carpet and my tricked-out waterbed. I wish I could share with you the wallpaper that we were actually replacing. If I had the foresight to realize how cool that paper would have been to me today I would have kept a piece of it so I could show you, but you’ll just have to use your imagination — picture red, white and blue psychedelic swirls. So late 60s! (For the record, that paper predated my birth.) The paper I ultimately chose was a sweet little pink floral vine on a creamy white background. So 80’s. Alas in the 90’s everyone started ripping out all that “country” wallpaper in favor of paint (think faux finishes ala the “Tuscan” look) and here we are again in the middle of a wallpaper renaissance. Recent advances in technology have led to developments in digital printing, which in turn has brought a new generation of artists and designers. We’re seeing cool unexpected patterns and large-scale murals everywhere. Is it a trend? Yes and I’m sure we’ll get out our scrapers in 10 years in favor of something else, but for now I say live a little. Life is short so don’t be afraid to make design choices that make you happy.

Here’s a round-up of some papers I’ve had my eye on lately. These are some of my favorites from Hygge and West. They carry papers from a handful of amazingly talented designers and even carry removable wallpaper tiles.

How could you not love this pineapple design by Rifle Paper Co.? I’ve seen this used in a laundry room. It would be cute in a powder room too.HW_RPC009_Pineapple_Ebony_Detail_web_Rifle Paper

You may know that a number of fabric houses also produce some beautiful papers. I love this Sigourney pattern from Quadrille. Sigourney_wallpaper Sigourney_wallpaper_Muse_Interiors

Another great source for paper is Serena & Lily. You know from my past posts how much I adore them. wp_env

I particularly like to see wallpaper used as accents in small spaces like an entryway, bathroom, laundry room or accent wall. It can be a great way to make a big impact without spending a fortune. I’ll follow up with a post on some great rooms highlighting wallpaper soon. Until then…

Designer Spotlight: Cecy J Interiors

Summer is officially here. Today was the last day of school for my girls. The last three weeks have been a sprint to the end of 1st and 6th grade with tons of end-of-the-year activities and last minute summer camp and vacation planning — which is a long winded way of saying these are my reasons for being an absent blogger. But alas I’m determined to get something up today and I’m inspired to highlight a local bay area designer named Cecily Mendell of Cecy J Interiors. Her work was recently featured on the cover of the spring edition of Trad Home Magazine (which by the way you should also check out) and is totally worth a look. Cecily and team create spaces that are sophisticated, but also warm, welcoming and family friendly at the same time. That’s a big plus in my book. I had a hard time choosing the photos to feature because frankly, there isn’t a room that I don’t like.

6-CecyJ-Interiiors-LosAlto-copy-1000x675I love the planked ceilings and floor-to-ceiling gray built-ins with brass accents in this room.

8-CecyJ-Interiros-LosAltos-copy-844x675The gorgeous grass cloth wallpaper compliments the art in this room, but the star of the show is the great mod light fixture.

9-CecyJ-Interiiors-Woodsid-copy-1000x675 10-CecyJ-Interiiors-Woodside-FamilyRoom-Detail-copy-1000x675This is a fabulous, light and airy family room — the built ins, the gray sectional, the coffee table and the pops of blue all work together seamlessly.

15-CecyJ-Interiros-LosAlto-copy-905x675This sweet bedroom caught my eye because I’m so in love with this “feather” wallpaper from Serena and Lily. Don’t be surprised if you see it show up someday in Casa Gillette.

5-CecyJ-Interiiors-Woodsid-copy-491x675 4-CecyJ-Interiors-SanDiego-copy-805x675The happy mix of patterns and colors add personality to an otherwise neutral room. Plus more beautiful built-ins.

Happy Wednesday. I hope you’re jumping into summer with both feet!
